The lichenized juvenile parasite Diploschistes muscorum infects the lichen Cladonia symphycarpia and gradually develops an independent Diploschistes thallus. Here we study how this influences the associated bacterial community, by sampling four transitional stages in Sweden and Germany, and investigating them by 454-sequencing of 16S rRNA genes.
