NRS-13795 | Half monthly returns of applications for particular portions of land as free grants

These returns were compiled for transmission to the Colonial Secretary as a result of the Regulations for the grant and sale of land notified in Government Order no.35 of 5 September 1826, which provided that after an applicant had made his selection of land "he will apprize the Surveyor General by letter, who will point out in his Report (to be transmitted Twice a Month for the Governors Information) the situation etc. of such Lands as have been selected". The returns show the number of the application, the name of the applicant, the number of acres, the date of selection, a description of the land (county, parish, boundaries etc.), the report of the Surveyor General as to whether the land should be granted. After about 1847 the returns mainly consist of land applied for religious and other public purposes. The returns for the period January-August 1826 are reports on memorials for land forwarded by the Surveyor General to the Land Board and the Colonial Secretary.
