Data from: Bad neighbors? Niche overlap and asymmetric competition between native and Lessepsian limpets in the Eastern Mediterranean rocky intertidal. Marine Pollution Bulletin 171: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.marpolbul.2021.112703Contains:- a key to the unique alpha-numeric species codes used in the datasets described below (species codes_intertidal.csv)- replicate-level species composition data (number of individuals collected within 1-m2 quadrats) for intertidal hard substrate molluscan assemblages on the Israeli Mediterranean shore (data _intertid_community.csv; see Steger et al., Materials and methods, and Supplements 1 and 2 for details on sampling stations, collecting methods, as well as station and replicate sample/quadrat codes)- replicate-level composition data as in 'data _intertid_community.csv', but distinguishing between the native (suffix '_nat') and non-indigenous (suffix '_al') components of the sampled molluscan assemblages (data_intertid_native_alien.csv; see Steger et al., Supplement 2 for an explanation of quadrat codes and Supplement 1 for station characteristics and locations)- density and dominance of the patelloidean limpets Patella caerulea (native Mediterranean species) and Cellana rota (Indo-Pacific/Lessepsian species) in each replicate 1-m2 sample (limpet_abundance_data.csv)Explanation of columns:Locality: one of four sampling localities on the Israeli Mediterranean coast (see Steger et al., Materials and methods and Supplement 1)Season: collecting season (either spring or autumn)Station: station code (see Steger et al., Supplement 1)Quadrat: a combination of station code and a sequential replicate number (1 to 3), separated by an underscoreLatitude: latitude of sampling locality (WGS84)Longitude: longitude of sampling locality (WGS84)Abund Cellana rota: density of Cellana rota (individuals per m2)Abund Patella caerulea: density of Patella caerulea (individuals per m2)Dominance_caerulea: proportion of P. caerulea, relative to the total density of P. caerulea and C. rotaseason_mean_dom_caerulea: seasonal mean of P. caerulea dominance (i.e., mean across the three replicates from any one season)Dominance_rota: proportion of C. rota, relative to the total density of P. caerulea and C. rotaseason_mean_dom_rota: seasonal mean of C. rota dominance (i.e., mean across the three replicates from any one season)- body size data for individuals of the native Mediterranean limpet Patella caerulea (Patella_size_data.csv) and the Lessepsian limpet Cellana rota (Cellana_size_data.csv)Explanation of columns:ID: unique identifier of measured limpet individualsPhoto ID: photo file number (not available)Sample_code: code for 1-m2 quadrats (see previously described dataset and Steger et al., Supplements 1 and 2)Code: alpha-numeric species code (G451 = Patella caerulea, G381 = Cellana rota)Length: individual length in mm (anterior-posterior dimension)Width: width of individuals in mm (lateral dimension)geo_mean: geometric mean of length and width (in mm)Notes: notes (not available)Station: station code (see previously described dataset, column 'Quadrat', and Steger et al., Supplement 1)Replicate: replicate number for quadrats (3 replicates taken per site and season)Fraction: size fraction/sieve mesh size (NA, as intertidal scraping samples were not sieved)abs_abund_Pat and abs_abund_Cell: densities of P. caerulea and C. rota (individuals per m2), respectively, in the sample specified in column 'Sample_code'prop_abund_Pat and prop_abund_Cell: proportion of P. caerulea and Cellana rota, relative to the total density of these two speciesLocation: one of four sampling localities on the Israeli Mediterranean coast (see Steger et al., Materials and methods and Supplement 1)Season: collecting season (either spring or autumn)Locality_Season/Locality_Season_Cellana: combination of locality and season information, introduced for convenience in data analysis (see R-codes at https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.14852454)- fuzzy-coded trait affinity data for each molluscan species encountered in the sampling quadrats (traits_intertidal.csv; see Steger et al., Materials and methods, and Supplement 1 for details on scoring and trait modality definitions)
