Abstract:
This article critically examines Rabindranath Tagore’s political thought, focusing on his rejection of narrow, aggressive nationalism and his philosophical commitment to universal humanism. Departing from the Eurocentric model of statehood rooted in conquest, exclusion, and racial superiority, Tagore envisioned the nation as a moral and cultural community that upholds empathy, diversity, and ethical self-realization. His well-known assertion—“Patriotism cannot be our final spiritual shelter; my refuge is humanity”—epitomizes this cosmopolitan outlook.
Drawing on his essays (‘Nationalism’, ‘The Crisis in Civilization’), lectures, and fiction (‘Ghare Baire’), the article explores how Tagore redefined nationalism through a spiritual lens, resisting both colonial oppression and the internal dangers of chauvinistic patriotism. He articulated an ideal of ‘swaraj’ not merely as political autonomy but as moral awakening and self-reliant cultural regeneration. His critique of Western modernity and imperialistic statecraft is situated within a broader ethical framework that anticipates contemporary discourses on cosmopolitanism and postcolonial critique.
Further, the paper examines Tagore’s alignment and divergence with figures such as Tolstoy, Gandhi, and Kant, revealing the depth and originality of his humanist internationalism. Institutions like Visva-Bharati embody his belief in intercultural education and the harmony of civilizations. In an era marked by the resurgence of identity-based nationalism, Tagore’s thought offers a prophetic alternative—one that insists on solidarity over supremacy, dialogue over domination.
Ultimately, the study argues that Tagore’s political vision transcends its historical context to address ongoing global crises, offering a framework for reimagining the nation not as a fortress of exclusion, but as a site of ethical engagement and planetary responsibility.

বিশ্বসভ্যতার উন্মেষপর্বে যখন জাতীয়তাবাদের ধারণা একদিকে ঔপনিবেশিক শোষণের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিবাদী হাতিয়ার হয়ে উঠেছে, অন্যদিকে তা আবার আত্মপরিচয় ও জাত্যাভিমান-নির্ভর সংকীর্ণ রাজনীতির জন্ম দিচ্ছে—ঠিক সেই সন্ধিক্ষণে রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর তাঁর অনন্য রাষ্ট্রদর্শন ও মানবতাবাদী চিন্তায় জাতীয়তাবাদের মূলগত পর্যালোচনার প্রস্তাব রাখেন। তিনি জাতীয়তাবাদকে কোনো একরৈখিক রাজনীতির সংজ্ঞায় আবদ্ধ করেননি, বরং এক বহুমাত্রিক নৈতিক ও আধ্যাত্মিক দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে জাতি-রাষ্ট্রের সীমানাকে অতিক্রম করে মানবতার বৃহত্তর পরিসরে উত্তরণ ঘটাতে চেয়েছেন। তাঁর এই দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি তৎকালীন ইউরোপীয় আধিপত্যবাদী জাতীয়তাবাদের রূঢ় অনুকরণ থেকে সম্পূর্ণ স্বতন্ত্র—এ এক অন্তর্জাগতিক অনুভবের সুসংবদ্ধ অভিব্যক্তি, যেখানে স্বদেশপ্রেম কখনোই অন্যজাতির প্রতি বিদ্বেষে রূপ নেয় না, বরং সংহতি, সহমর্মিতা ও বৈশ্বিক ন্যায়বোধে পরিণত হয়।
