Countries in Eastern Europe arranged by Number of Universities in Top Ranks - 30 January 2026

The wider Eastern Europe region includes 27 countries—coincidentally the same number as the member states of the European Union (EU)—located west of the Ural Mountains and the Ural River. In terms of geopolitical significance, Eastern Europe spans 7,4 million sq km and has a total population of approximately 424 million—without counting in the 34 million Russians who live east of the Ural mountains. This makes the region significantly larger than the EU (which covers nearly 4.3 million sq km), more populous than the US (348 million people) and nearly as populous as the EU (450 million people). Notably, this region includes one of the world's two nuclear superpowers: Russia. As regards to tertiary education, Eastern Europe hosts 796 research universities, a figure comparable to the 893 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the EU. 589 of Eastern European research universities rank in the top 5000 in the world, 43 in the top 1000, and 14 in the top 500. HEIs in Eastern Europe collectively account for about 103 million citations—slightly more than the total number of citations (101 million) attributed to the top five US universities (Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, and Columbia), and substantially more than the total (63 million) for the top five UK universities (Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial College, and King’s College London).
