VPRS 59 School Statistics

The volumes in this series contains comprehensive statistics pertaining to the operations of schools under the control of the Denominational Schools Board.Each volume itself is taken up with the transcribed quarterly and annual returns of schools under the Board's supervision. Schools are grouped under denominational headings and listed by name. On the lefthand page details included may be under the headings of the Name of the School, Sex (girls, boys or mixed), On the Roll (boys, girls and total), Average Attendance, details of numbers able to pay fees and the rates of payment, the total of the actual Government aid for each child on the books and the average school fee for each child on the books, the numbers of School Days, holidays and Sundays, details of totals of full days attendance and the total amount of school fees.On the righthand page of the Abstracts are given details of Government Aid under the headings of Teachers (name, period from and to and amount), Assistants (and later Trainees and House Rent Allowance).The units in VPRS 59 / P1 were previously registered as Units 1 and 2 of VPRS 1409 Statistics and Returns. The information from returns from schools was summarised on large sheets which were bound together in folders. The data recorded remained the same as that entered previously into the volume. There is no Unit 1 in this consignment due to computer system problems.At the front of each of the volumes is an Index to Teachers Listed in Denominational School Statistics 1848 - 1857. This index gives the name of the teacher and the pages of the volume of statistics where it appears. Other separate sheets pasted in the front of the volume and in a loose bundle in a pocket at the rear of the volume have statistics for the years 1848 to 1852. Information collected and collated for 1848 to 1851 gives the name of the schools (grouped by denomination), an indication of the year of their establishment, the name of the teacher and in a large number of cases, a notation that no aid was given to the school.Papers pertaining to 1851 are the summary of the quarterly returns provided by the schools with the school names (grouped by denomination), the number of scholars (boys, girls, infants and total), the name of the teacher, the amount of Government assistance and the amount of school fees. For 1851 and 1852 further sheets are Schedules of Salary Abstracts recording the payment of teacher's salaries under the headings of School, Name of Teacher, Signed by, When signed by, Amount, Name of Person (if any) Authorised by teacher to receive the amount and the date when passed to the Audit Office. A number of the quarterly returns amongst those loose at the back of the volume also provide summaries of the numbers of students being instructed in the various subjects of the school curriculum.
