Strains A60T or A316T, obtained from untreated water used for human consumption, were compared with the currently known 13 Citrobacter species, using genotypic and phenotypic approaches. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of strains A60T and A316T to the sequences of type strains of other Citrobacter species were <98.9% and <99.0%, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on recN gene sequences showed a clear distinction of strains A60T or A316T from the type strains of the closest related Citrobacter species. Percentages of genomic resemblance, including average nucleotide identity (ANI) and in silico genome-to-genome comparison between A60T or A316T and type strains of closely related Citrobacter species, namely C. freundii, C. europaeus and C. braakii were all below XX.X%. The ability to metabolize different compounds also discriminated A60T or A316 from other Citrobacter species. The results obtained support the description of two novel species of the genus Citrobacter, for which the name Citrobacter lusitaneae sp. nov. is proposed, with strain A60T (=XX=XX) as the type strain, and the name Citrobacter vieirensis sp. nov. is proposed, with strain A316T (=XX=XX) as the type strain. The G+C content of strain A60T is XX% and A316T is XX%.
