The function of the Office of the Public Solicitor was to provide legal aid to paupers or persons able to satisfy a stringent means test as provided for in the Poor Persons Legal Assistance Act 1927. Representation was available for certain criminal and civil proceedings, including matrimonial causes, until the passing of the Legal Aid Act 1969 when responsibility for legal aid in civil and matrimonial cases passed to the Legal Aid Committee.The series in custody consists of a sample of the case files of the Office of the Public Solicitor. Files contain an application from the prospective client for legal assistance and a decision regarding the application with cases to do with criminal, civil or matrimonial matters. The file may also contain correspondence regarding representation, particularly in court. Barristers and solicitors claims may also be included as is a report of the case. Files may contain copies of evidence given and/or transcripts of the cases or the judgment as, for example a divorce decree nisi.
