Taobao Towns and Taobao Villages are a series of initiatives launched by e-commerce giant Alibaba to support the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups, aiming to provide services including financing, marketing, training and consulting for these enterprises and innovative businesses. As of 2022, a total of 7,780 Taobao Villages and 2,429 Taobao Towns have emerged across China. In 2009, only 3 Taobao Villages were identified nationwide; this figure rose to 20 by 2013.
