Beyond the Text: Human-Centred Design and Evaluation of Visualisation for Narrative

This thesis examines how data-driven stories that combine text, graphics, and interaction can be designed more systematically. Such stories are common in news and public communication, but they are often slow to produce and hard to scale because they rely on hand-crafted design. This thesis studies real design practice, introduces a simple model for representing story structure over time, and tests different presentation styles in a user study. The results show that visual presentations can improve reading speed, but some designs reduce accuracy on complex tasks. This work provides practical methods for creating and evaluating data-driven stories.
