Flood hazard perceptions, communications, and responses from a nationally representative sample of the U.S. public

We designed an online survey in Qualtrics and distributed that survey through Prolific, where we obtained a nationally representative sample of 925 participants. Our survey includes questions about previous flood experience, general knowledge about flooding and nature-based solutions (NbS), flood risk perceptions, vulnerability to flooding, preferred flood mitigation strategies (e.g., NbS versus grey infrastructure), and sociodemographic questions. This survey was designed as part of a larger project seeking to better understand perceptions and behaviors about flooding to improve flood forecast design by (1) enhancing the ability of first responders to understand how forecasts will be understood and used by individuals and communities, and (2) providing insights to inform longer-term community planning.

This dataset includes metadata in the first sheet (labeled Metadata) and the survey responses in the second sheet (RawData). In the metadata, comments let the reader know whether any given variable was included in the survey or created to analyze the survey results.
