To better understand the variation in natural guppy gut microbial communities and the potential microbial roles in guppy divergence and adaptation, we utilized amplicon pyrosequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA genes across different populations from four streams. We sampled two streams in two different years to assess the temporal stability of microbiome divergence within some populations. Comparisons of gut communities of field-caught fish to those reared in the lab on different diets and to communities from surrounding aquatic habitats were performed to yield further insight into the stability and origins of guppy gut microbiota.
