Microbiota-derived metabolites suppress arthritis by amplifying aryl-hydrocarbon receptor activation in regulatory B cells

The main goal of this study was to complement currently published data showing associations between changes in the gut microbiome and arthritis. We have found that alongside changes in the microbiome there are also changes in the levels of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) in the serum of rheumatoid arthritis patients and arthritic mice. Importantly, we show that supplementation with said SCFA can ameliorate murine arthritis severity and recover the dysbiosis of the gut microbiome.
