Teat number is an important trait that directly affects the reproductive efficiency and profitability of pigs. In this study, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) based on genome resequencing identified 7 significant SNPs on SSC2 and SSC7 for total teat number (TTN) trait in 888 Large White x Tongcheng crossed pigs. Three reported candidate genes VRTN, ABCD4and RSG6related to 4 significant SNPs on SSC7 were verified in this study. TTC17 linked to rs340400902 on SSC2 is novel candidate gene associatedwith TTN in pigs. The teat number of pigs with TT genotype of rs340400902 have approximately one fewer teat compared to pigs of CC genotype. In addition, T allele of rs340400902in Large White x Tongcheng crossed pigs originated in Tongcheng pigs. Overall, our study will provide SNPs and candidate genes for genetic improvement of teat numbers trait in pigs.
