The CoastNet Sea Surface Temperature Upwelling Index for West Iberia (1982–2021)

This dataset provides a high-resolution Sea Surface Temperature (SST)-based coastal upwelling index (UISST) for the western Iberian Peninsula (37°–44° N) covering the period January 1982 to December 2021. The dataset was derived from the NOAA Coral Reef Temperature Anomaly Database (CoRTAD Version 6), a gap-filled, weekly averaged SST product at 4-km spatial resolution. Nearshore (midshelf) and offshore SST time series were extracted to calculate the coastal upwelling index following the methodology described in the accompanying Earth System Science Data (ESSD) publication. The dataset includes weekly SST fields along the midshelf and offshore reference lines, the derived upwelling index (UISST), climatologies, and supporting metadata required for reuse. This dataset represents the official scientific release of the CoastNet historical SST Upwelling Index and constitutes the reference version associated with the accompanying ESSD data paper. Future operational Near Real-Time (NRT) products will build upon this scientific dataset while remaining distinct from this archived release.
