Annotated record of the detailed examination of Mn deposits from the CLIMAX II Expedition stations aboard R/V Argo in the central North Pacific

Undamaged deep-sea manganese nodules were retrieved from a box core from the central North Pacific and quickly preserved in formaldehyde solution. Light and scanning electron microscope studies of the nodule surface reveal the presence of a variety of fragile filamentous and coccoid bacterial morphotypes, associated with an organic film that covers the botryoid surface.
