Root-associated bacteria from 6150 masl Raw sequence reads. root metagenome

Six vascular plants were discovered growing in the Northwestern Himalayas at an unprecedented elevation of 6150 masl in the subnival zone of Mount Shukule. In addition to analysing the plants, we studied their root associated microbial community to understand their role in the upward migration of plants. While no arbascular mycorrhiza fungi were found, the roots harboured a rich and diverse bacterial community, consisting of bacteria previously not known to be associated with plants. In addition, our analysis suggests that while the soil at the site of 6150 masl was likely the source for most bacteria, some have been transported to the spot with the dispersing seeds, and later became of the plants’ root-associated community.
