Mitochondrial DNA from the extinct Japanese sea lion, Zalophus japonicus, was sequenced from terrestrial sedimentary DNA using the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform. Target molecules were enriched using a custom-designed mitochondrial DNA capture bead method.
