Plasmodium falciparum E5 was cloned from the original NF54 parasite isolate and it was shown to be closely related to but distinct from 3D7, the parasite used for the P. falciparum genome nucleotide sequencing project. Illumina sequencing is being used to identify recombination events. This will provide valuable opportunities for comparative analysis of recombination events and to study diversity within the antigen encoding genes of P.falciparum.
