These volumes record details of patients admitted to Wallsend District Hospital, along with a daily tally, broken down by categories, of patients in the Hospital. Admissions are recorded in a-order alphabetical sections in the front part of each volume; tallies are on pre-printed monthly pages in the hinder parts. Patient details typically include the patient's name, age, occupation, native place and current residence; the nature of their complaint; the dates of admission and of discharge or death; the degree to which treatment was successful; and (if relevant) any cash or valuable effects about their person on admission. The daily tallies give numbers of admissions, discharges, births and deaths, with monthly totals (recorded separately for males and females); they also record numbers of staff on duty and the names of nursing sisters on particular duties.
