Mastoiditis caused by novel sequence type of non toxigenic toxin gene-bearing (NTTB) Corynebacterium diphtheriae

A patient presented with mastoiditis and Corynebacterium diphtheriae was isolated. The strain was positive by PCR for toxin, but negative with a toxin Elek test. Whole genome sequencing revealed that the toxin gene was disrupted by the insertion sequence, IS1132. This result explains the Elek test.
