VPRS 963 Register of Inward Correspondence (Colonial Architect 1853 - 1855)

The Public Works Department (VA 669) had wide-ranging responsibilities for all public works and buildings, including construction, maintenance and fitting out of these buildings. Other major responsibilities include roads and bridges, ports and harbours, local government and water supply.This series was used for the registration for inward correspondence, but the numbering of correspondence did not commence until January 1855. The series was created by the office of the Colonial Architect (1853-1855), responsible to the Colonial Secretary (VA 856), and then the Department of Public Works (VA 669) (1853-1862). Correspondence references are to the Registry of the Colonial Secretary and disposal of correspondence was often to the Colonial Secretary. If the correspondence was referred on to the Colonial Secretary the series records the Colonial Secretarys inwards correspondence registration number. If the correspondence has been received from the Colonial Secretary the series records the Colonial Secretarys outward correspondence registration number.Details included are the date of letter, the date of receipt, and the reply to it, the name or office of the correspondent, a summary of the subject of the correspondence and its disposal. Subjects of correspondence are to do with matters relating to all aspects of public works.The correspondence registered in this series is indexed by VPRS 12666 Index to Correspondence (Colonial Architect) for the period 1854-1855.The 1928 Pitt Report indicates that most of the inward correspondence to 1905 was destroyed by 1923 with the exception of special files. VPRS 967 Inward Correspondence Files comprises the only extant correspondence files from the Public Works Department for the period covered by this series.
