This statistic shows the total number of people with an arrear in mortgage payments in the Netherlands from 2014 to 2017, by age group. In 2017, 89 people aged between 18 and 24 years old had the least arrears. The European housing, or residential real estate, market has recently shown clear signs of recovery, with an increasing house price being the main trend. In recent years, the housing market has continued to rise in the Netherlands due the asset purchase programme (APP) of the European Central Bank and the, consequently, low mortgage rates. For example, the number of registered transactions reached a value of approximately 215,000 in 2016. The value of mortgages in 2017 is forecasted to increase with approximately 3.9 percent compared to 2016. Between 2006 and 2016, the total mortgage debt from households in the Netherlands increased from approximately 548 billion euros in 2006 to approximately 664 billion euros in 2016. In the fourth quarter of 2016, the market share of mortgage turnover in the Netherlands reached approximately 54 percent for the three banks ABN Amro, Rabobank and ING.
