Manganese(II) oxidation in aquatic and terrestrial environments is primarily actioned by microbial processes, where Mn(II) is cycled to biogenic Mn(IV). This activity is strictly an aerobic process capable of oxidizing Mn(II) at higher magnitudes compared to chemical oxidation. Perchlorate is a strong oxidizing compound and ubiquitous in nature. The aim of this work for Halomonas sp. Strain SSL was to understand the molecular mechanisms associated with Mn(II) oxidation and perchlorate tolerance under moderate halophilic conditions. Halomonas sp. Strain SSL is capable of Mn(II) oxidation and increased perchlorate resistance in moderate halophilic conditions.
