Surveys of farmer households and seed suppliers in the context of a seed value chain analysis for common bean and banana in Uganda

The purpose of this study was to establish the roles of different actors involved in the supply of bean seed and banana materials in Uganda, characterize actors and the system, and establish the relationships, gaps and weak points in the flow of information and performance of the system. The study also aimed at analyzing the constraints seed suppliers faced in predicting and responding to demand. Questionnaires were developed, pre-tested and used to interview 166 randomly selected representatives of farmer households and 62 seed suppliers across three districts in Uganda (Kabale, Nakaseke and Sheema). Seed suppliers included individual bean seed suppliers, farmer groups supplying bean seed, private bean seed traders and agro dealers, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, church affiliated organizations and officials from the National Agricultural Advisory Services.
