We propose to detect or to constrain the lowredshift photoelectricabsorption caused by metals in lowredshift damped lymanalphasystems. The measurements will be used to derive accurate metaltohydrogenratios in the range 0.1 to 1 times solar. This program will lead to important results on the chmical enrichment history of the gaseous components of damped Lymanalpha galaxies.
