This proposal describes the use of BCDI at the ID01 beamline to understand the hydrogen embrittlement localized plasticity (HELP) mechanism in Ni and Ni-Cr model single crystals. Three-dimensional coherent X-ray diffraction will be used to image the hydrogen-induced strain, and to quantify the time dependent structural evolution induced during hydrogen charging. Comparison between pristine and nano-indented crystals of similar morphology will help elucidate the importance of defect nucleation during hydrogen embrittlement.
