Cruise JR17 occupied 24 days from 12 December 1996 to 05 January 1997,
to and from Port Stanley, Falkland Islands.
This was the second in a series of cruises in the British Antarctic
Survey Pelagic Ecosystem Studies Programme, to study interannual
variability of the South Georgia marine ecosystem. This involves and
annual study of:
(A) The large scale physical and biological systems
to the north and west of the Island, across the Polar Front.
(B) The operation of the marine ecosystem in the vicinity of South Georgia.
Principal objectives:
(1) - Undertake a standard biological-hydrographic transect accross
the Polar Frontal Zone.
(2) - Undertake a series of hydrographic -hydroacoustic transects in 2
areas on the north shelf of South Georgia.
(3) - Station based and targetted biological and hydrographic sampling
in 2 areas on the north shelf of South Georgia.
