VPRS 4654 Details of Expenditure Book

The Roads and Bridges Branch of the Department of Public Works (VA 669) became responsible in 1877 for the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges, succeeding the Department of Roads and Bridges (1858 1871) and the Department of Roads and Railways ((1871 1877).This series summarises the annual expenditure of the preceding agencies to the point when control passes to the Department of Public Works. For each year details are given in relation to the Vote from Parliament and the receipts from Treasury tolls. Under each class, the projects and their sub-sections which had been financed are set out with the details of major expenditure for contracts, salaries et al with the amounts expended. Expenditure is to do with the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges and tollgates not the responsibility of District Councils.
