ThelatestreportfromtheTreatmentActionGroup(TAG)andtheStopTBPartnership,onglobalfundingtrendsforTBresearchanddevelopment(R&D),presentsnewdataonTBR&Dfundingin2018andanalyzestrendsinfundingsince2005.Thereport-TuberculosisResearchFundingTrends,2005-2018-isacriticalaccountabilitytoolandservesasabarometerofprogressinraisingsupportforthescientificinnovationneededtoeliminateTB.GlobalTBresearchfundingtotaledUS$906millioninfiscalyear2018,anincreaseof$134millionfrom2017.ThisisthehighestleveloffundingeverrecordedbyTAG.TBscientistsandtheiradvocatesshouldfeelencouragedbythreeback-to-backyearsofincreasinginvestmentsfrom2016to2018.However,the2018fundingfigurestillfallsmorethanhalf-wayshortoftheUS$2billionannualtargetsetat2018’sUnitedNationsHighLevelMeetingonTB."TheUS$134millionincreaseinTBresearchfundingiscauseforcelebrationandshowsthatthetirelesseffortsofTBpartnersaroundtheworldaregettingresults,"saidLucicaDitiu,ExecutiveDirectoroftheStopTBPartnership."ButthisstillleavesusshortoftheUS$2billionannualfundingfigureendorsedattheUNHigh-LevelMeeting.Becausewe'reofftrack,we'llnowneedtospendmoreeachyeartomakeupthedeficit.Wecan’taffordtocoastonrecentmomentumifweareseriousaboutendingTB-it’stimetoputourmoneywhereourmouthsare".
