Replication data and code for "Beyond GDP in Cities: Construction and Empirical Assessment of a Multidimensional Urban Productivity Index"

Replication data and code for a composite Urban Productivity Index covering 545 OECD functional urban areas across 32 countries for 2001 to 2021, assembled entirely from public sources. The package contains the assembled city-year panel, the constructed index and its four pillar scores, the leave-one-out productive-conditions component used for empirical testing, and nineteen R scripts that reproduce every estimate, table and figure in the associated article. Source series come from the OECD functional urban area databases, the World Bank World Development Indicators and Worldwide Governance Indicators, the UNDP Human Development Report, the Caldara and Iacoviello geopolitical risk index, and World Bank commodity price data; series identifiers and coverage are documented in the README and in Appendix A of the article. The estimation code covers index construction and normalisation, the variance decomposition measuring how much of each indicator varies between cities of the same country, uncertainty analysis of the ranking across 1,000 weighting and aggregation draws, forward-growth and classification specifications with country-clustered and small-sample inference, out-of-sample forecast comparisons, and local projections estimating exposure-conditioned responses to geopolitical risk and commodity price shocks. Scripts reproduce results that failed as well as those that held. Written for R 4.6.1. Code released under MIT, derived data under CC BY 4.0.
