NRS-16115 | Maternity Admissions Books [Newcastle Benevolent Hospital (1889- 1939) / Newcastle Western Suburbs Maternity Hospital (1939- )]

There are five pre-printed volumes of an original six; vol. 2 (June 1903 - October 1912) is missing. Vols Four, Five and Six are numbered, and are labelled "Benevolent Asylum." All are indexed in front. Thirteen unused openings at the end of Vol. Six suggest that there were probably no more to the series. Each patient was the subject of a two-page opening, designed to give the fullest possible record of her case. The questions to which answers were required seem to indicate that the Benevolent Society originally expected the Hospital mainly to serve unwed mothers.
