Mesorhabidits belari produce females asexually through gynogenesis and also systematically produce a low percentage of sexual males through amphimixy. Genome assembly and identification of SNP allowed us to demonstrate that females are never produced by amphimixy. Identification of sex specific reads allowed us to show that this species relies on a XX/XY system. While males produce both X and Y-bearing spermm, in 90% of the cases, eggs are fertilized by Y-bearing sperm, revealing a strong fertilization drive.
