On the lack of sensitivity of clinical supervisors concerning the historicity of the name of their „profession“ – Conceptual myths and some facts on the origin and background of the word “supervision” from an Integrative Perspective

Es werden historische Materialien über die Geschichte des Begriffs „Supervision“ zusammengetragen, die zeigen, dass das Wort aus der ekklesialen und feudalen disziplarischen Verwaltungspraxis stammt, Machtdiskursen, in denen Supervision eine Kontrollfunktion hatte. Supervisoren waren z.B. als Aufseher in den Armenhäusern, wie sie das Armenrecht der Elisabeth I einführte. Dieser gesamte Hintergrund wird von der Supervisonsliteratur und vom supervisorischen Feld völlig ausgeblendet und verleugnet. Mit einer solchen kollektiven Skotomisierung – um nicht von Ignoranz zu reden – ist die Gefahr gegeben, dass die Machtdikurse (Foucault) in der Praxis von Supervision heute unbeachtet bleiben – potentiell zum Nachteil der Supervisanden und deren KlientInnen/PatientInnen. Die hier präsentierten Materialien stehen im Zusammenhang mit der Arbeit von Edlhaimb-Hrubec (2005): „Etymologische Frag-Mente zu Wort und Begriff der Supervision im Fokus der Integrativen Supervision“. Historical material is presented concerning the history of the notion „supervision“ showing that the word originates in the ecclesiastical and feudal disciplinary practice of administrative authority, discourses of power, in which supervision had the function of control. Supervisors e.g. were the overseer in the poorhouses, as they have been established in consequence of the poor laws of Elisabeth I. This background is in the literature on clinical supervision and by the supervisory field completely cut out and denied. This implies the danger, that discourses of power (Foucault) in the actual practice of supervision nowadays are neglected. Such collective scotomization – if not to speak of ignorance – is bearing potential detriment for supervisees and their clients/patients.
