These maps and plans do not have a Lands Department catalogue number. Some are printed maps which were sent to the Department by the publishers and hence did not fit into the ordinary cataloguing scheme. A number are copies of proposed town plans sent to the Colonial Secretary for transmission to the Executive Council. If the town was approved a similar map may be found in the Surveyor General's Catalogue of maps and plans, 1792-1887 (COD 84-87). Custody HistoryThis series was formerly titled: Maps and plans arranged by the Mitchell Library's map classification system [Department of Lands]. These maps were archival estrays received from the Mitchell Library. They were transferred to the Mitchell Library in a least five transfers, based on annotations on the plans themselves (April, December 1916, December 1920, October 1921 and April 1922). They were transferred to State Records in the early 1980s.(SR Map Nos. 37-179, 1115-18, 6239-62, 6264-6301, 6308-13; SZ561; aperture card copies of many of these available). 217 maps.
