Improving plant nitrogen use efficiency is not only important for reducing nitrogen fertilizer use and improving crop yield, but also an effective way to develop low nitrogen tolerant crop varieties and achieve sustainable development of green agriculture. Highland barley has attracted much attention due to its good stress tolerance, especially its adaptability to poor soil. Under low nitrogen stress, compared to ZQ22, KL18 can increase root length and lateral root number by increasing the expression of root growth and development related genes NLP1, NLP2, SAUR32, and IAA25, and promote elongation of elongation zone cells, thereby altering root structure to increase nitrogen absorption capacity.
