Survey of truck drivers on NSW highways, 1976

The survey was designed to provide background information on typical long distance truck driver behaviour, lifestyle, opinions and attitudes. Information was compared with similar data collected during the same period from drivers of other vehicles. Topics included opinions concerning the major causes of both car and truck accidents, the use of seatbelts, police treatment of truck drivers, other driver treatment of truck drivers, licence points for truck drivers, log book restrictions and NSW speed restrictions for trucks. Other questions concerned ways in which road safety could be improved, likes and dislikes about own job and ratings of different categories of drivers such as motor cyclists, ordinary car drivers and truck drivers. Details of the purpose and distance of the current trip, driving experience and accident record and average annual mileage, type of vehicle and vehicle assessment were collected. Information on the respondent's use of alcohol, cigarettes and stimulants and any experience of hallucinations while driving was also obtained. Background variables included age, marital status, gross income and education.
