Commercial Diversity in Madrid - Gómez-Varo et al. 2024 replication

This dataset contains the complete raw data for my Master's thesis in Computational Social Science at the Universidad Carlos III de MAdrid. It examines commercial and facility diversity in Madrid, recreating Gómez-Varo et al's 2024 framework from "Unravelling retail diversity through its spatial relationship with social vulnerability and tourism pressures in Barcelona" The archive assembles open data from multiple public sources covering 2023–2026: the Madrid City Council Open Data Portal (datos.madrid.es), the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE), and the Spanish Cadastre (Dirección General del Catastro), and the osm package in R (data not included here). These files support the construction of retail and facility diversity, demographic, and built-environment variables for Madrid's census sections. The analysis code that processes these files is available in my GitHub repository (linked below). To reproduce the analysis, download and unzip this archive so that the resulting DATA/ folder sits at the root of the cloned repository, then run the three Quarto scripts in order (pipeline, modeling, appendix).
