Sundays and Swartkops estuaries located in South Africa, Eastern Cape are anthropogenically impacted by commercial agricultural and industrial activities respectively. Swartkops is partially fed by stormwater from the canals flowing through industries and townships while Sundays is fed by rainwater. Microbial populations were identified using 16S/18S rRNA gene sequencing and the diversity and distribution patterns between the two contrasting estuarine ecosystems were compared.
