Table S3. NO<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup> production by Methylocystis sp. strain SC2 in response to increasing NH<sub>4</sub>+ concentrations. Note: SC2 cells were incubated in 120-ml serum bottles under a headspace CH<sub>4</sub>:air mixing ratio of 20:80 (v/v) at 25 ℃, with shaking at 130 rpm. Samples (1 ml) for measurement of NO<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup> were collected at 5 (30 mM, 50 mM NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>) or 6 (1 mM, 10 mM, and 75 mM NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>) time points. NO2- was measured by the Griess Reagent System (Promega Corporation, Madison, WI). Significant difference between comparison groups were calculated using one-way ANOVA Bonferroni t-test: *<em>p</em>-value≤0.05, **<em>p</em>-value≤0.01, ***<em>p</em>-value≤0.001 [comparing the same incubation time point across the increasing NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup> concentrations (10 mM, 30 mM, 50 mM, 75 mM NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>) relative to the control treatment (1 mM NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>)]; and<sup> ǂ</sup><em>p</em>-value≤0.05, <sup>ǂǂ</sup><em>p</em>-value≤0.01, <sup>ǂǂǂ</sup><em>p</em>-value≤0.001 [comparing the same NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup> treatment over incubation time in relation to time point 1].
