Adobe house of Don Tomas Baruel built about 1845 -- still standing in San Juan and belonging to his God-daughter Dona Josefin Ibarra de Dunn. In this house at the time of this picture (1899) lived the famous Chola Martina the sweetheart of the bandit Juan Flores whom in 1857 she helped to kill Sherriff Barton and his posse and also the German Jew merchant of San Juan, George Pflugardt. Juan Flores was often in this house." -- A. Yorba.; "Interior of Tomas Burruel adobe sala looking south. Tomas Burruel was the Zapatero of the old pueblo. Note bench of shoes to be repaired (to left, under old Spanish hat). Here lived 'La Chola Martina,' who, in 1857, helped her lover the bandolero Juan Flores kill Jorge Pflugardt and later Sheriff Barton and his posse. Here she sheltered the bandoleros. 1890"
