NuclearEnergyisalargedomesticsourceofclean,nearlygreenhousegas-freeenergy,makingmajorcontributionstowardmeetingournation’scurrentandfutureenergydemands.However,itfacesamyriadofchallengesthatcouldimpederealizingitsfullpotentialforaddressingeconomic,environmentalandenergysecuritygoals.TheeventwasheldJune6-8,2012.Researchonthenanoscalehasbeencaptivatinglaboratoriessincethemid1980sandwaselevatedtonationalprominencein2000bytheformationoftheUSNationalNanotechnologyInitiative(NNI),sponsoredbyboththeExecutiveandLegislativebranchesoftheUSGovernment.Withfocusedresearcheffortsfrom15FederalAgencies,NNIandrelatednanoscienceprogramshavealreadyrevolutionizedhugeexpansesofhightechnology(e.g.,electronicsandmedicine).Extensionofnanotechnologyresearchtoenergyrelatedfieldsiscurrentlyunderway.Untilnowhowever,noconcertedefforthasbeenmadeintheareaofNuclearenergy.NuclearEnergyisalargedomesticsourceofclean,nearlygreenhousegas-freeenergy,makingmajorcontributionstowardmeetingournation’scurrentandfutureenergydemands.However,itfacesamyriadofchallengesthatcouldimpederealizingitsfullpotentialforaddressingeconomic,environmentalandenergysecuritygoals.Nuclearenergymightgreatlybenefitfromadaptationsofnanoscalemethodsandmaterialsinordertoovercomethesechallengesandachieveacontinuedoranexpandedroleinthelong-termenergyplatform.
