Pythium insidiosum is the causal agent of pythiosis, a deadly disease of horses and dogs in tropical and subtropical regions. It also affects humans in Southeast Asia and is considered an emerging human pathogen in the United States. Our research addresses the evolutionary mechanisms of this pathogen using genomic data. Our specific aim is to identify genes involved in mammalian pathogenesis and examine their evolutionary origin.
