This dataset provides monthly sunshine duration data at a 1 km spatial resolution for China, covering January through December 1981. It is developed using station-based monthly sunshine duration records from 824 national standard and basic meteorological stations across China for the same period. After undergoing rigorous quality control and screening, the Thin Plate Spline (TPS) method integrated in the ANUSPLIN software was utilized for spatial interpolation, with the 1 km-resolution topographic DEM of China as the covariate, to produce monthly grid datasets with a horizontal resolution of 1 km × 1 km for China from January through December 1981. For convenient storage, all data are encoded as int16 type, with the unit of 0.1 h. Each annual dataset consists of 12 individual data files, which are named by concatenating the year and month; for instance, the file named 19811 corresponds to the sunshine duration data of January 1981. The geographical scope of this dataset covers the main terrestrial areas of China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions), and excludes regions such as the South China Sea islands and reefs.
