VPRS 16852 Register of Applicants for Nursing and other Positions.

These registers consist of entries for prospective applicants for nursing and other positions. Folios are ruled in red in 3-4 manual or printed columns and record the date, the name and address of the applicant and prospective entry date to a nursing school (unless another type of position sort - see volumes 4 & 2 only), date of birth and/or age of applicant, comments (many value judgements!), level of schooling and/or where previously employed and family situation/background which may include country of origin (possibly attained from the interview process?).Where names have been crossed out, this may indicate that the person has entered Preliminary Training School (PTS), has left, or may not be considered suitable. Volumes 3 & 5 have 7 columns and include name, age, date of application (or possibly interview date?), education level, if form received, personal interview comments and if PTS commenced.While applicants may be of any age, it would appear that for certain periods, school girls registered as applicants either in their Intermediate Certificate year (= Yr.10), Leaving Certificate year (= Yr. 11) or Matriculation year (= Yr. 12) - as the waiting list to become a Children's Hospital nurse may have been very long. (Also, the Vic State Government offered teaching and nursing bursaries/scholarships at various times).While all volumes in this accession record the same type of information further research is required to establish if they form a discrete Series. Volumes 1 & 4 are very obviously successive volumes, but the date range of Vol 3 overlaps with them. Volumes 2 & 5 overlap a little (possibly due to the nature of the record). Volumes 1, 2, 4 have the same format and have an alpha index at the front, while volumes 3 & 5 are larger foolscap format and are self-indexing.Prior to transfer to Public Record Office Victoria, the records in this series were maintained as part of the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) Archives. They were part of RCH accession number 2011/007.
