Dataset from COVID-19 Testing and Linkage to Care with African American Church and Health Agency Partners

Background: The purpose of this study was to test whether a multilevel, culturally tailored COVID-19 testing and linkage-to-care intervention improved testing uptake among adult African American church-affiliated members. The study also examined beliefs about and participation in contact tracing, along with COVID-19 prevention behaviors.

Materials/Methods: This study used a two-arm clustered, randomized community trial design. African American churches were randomized to either a tailored multilevel intervention or a non-tailored attention-control condition. Outcomes were assessed at six months. Data collection focused on testing uptake, contact tracing approval and participation, and prevention behaviors.

Outcome/Impact: The study provided evidence on whether a church-based, culturally tailored strategy increased COVID-19 testing and engagement with care services. The intervention supported faith leaders with culturally appropriate tools to promote COVID-19 testing and provide linkage to care, including health insurance enrollment, medical appointments, community resources, and contact tracing.
