The antibiotic-susceptible strain S. aureus SG511-Berlin, has been extensively used in antibiotic screening and as a model strain in basic research on antibiotics, and as control strain in routine tests. It is known that a native graS mutation renders S. aureus SG511 Berlin susceptible towards antimicrobial peptides. We sequenced the complete genome of S. aureus SG511 to identify correlate its genome sequence to phenotypic susceptibility data in order to enable a better interpretation of test and screening results obtained with this widely used strain.
