Although fiber-associated bacterial communities have been studied in great detail in the rumen, little is known of the existence or composition of such a community in the hindguts of flagellate-free higher termites. The fiber-associated bacterial communities from higher wood-feeding termites Nasutitermes corniger and Nasutitermes takasagoensis were studied by the pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA genes.
