Biogas production from avocado oil processing-derived wastes: the effect of phytochemicals on the biomethane potential and microbial community structure

The presence of phytochemicals in plant substrates used for anaerobic digestion and biogas production is highly likely to affect biomethanation. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of inhibition and effects on microbial dynamics for each phytochemical have yet to be thoroughly investigated and understood. Any significant progress in the consistent use of various agro-residues must take into account the effects that varying phytochemical composition and concentrations may have on the AD process and seek ways to mitigate these effects. It is critical to understand how phytochemicals affect microbes that degrade biomass in order to improve biogas yield from plant-based substrates. Thus, the present study is attempting to determine the effects the presence of phytochemicals may have on microbial biodiversity and ultimately biogas yield.
