Gerard Fowke Excavations Collection: Archeology

<p>Around 1907 the St. Louis Society of the Archaeological Institute of America underwrote a systematic survey and excavation of prehistoric mounds along the Missouri River and its tributaries led by archaeologist Gerard Fowke. In 1912 the Bureau of American Ethnology published the results of his research in Missouri as "Antiquities of Central and Southern Missouri."
The Gerard Fowke Excavations Collection contains labeled artifact and excavation site photographs from Fowke's excavation in the Missouri River Valley in Boone County and Saline County ca. 1906. Fowke probably took the photographs. A typed inventory of the item descriptions is filed with the collection.

<p>This collection contains some culturally sensitive images including 54 photographs of the destruction of burial sites that have been removed from the main body of the collection. Includes images identified as: Dawson Mound, Ewing Mound, Brenner Mound, Louisiana work, Keller Mound, Bammhoefer Mound, Easley Mound, and Uffmann. Permission to view those images must first be obtained from the Osage Nation. Please contact MHS Photos and Prints staff to begin the process.</p>

<p>Subjects include: beads; Native American artifacts; clay pots and jars propped up by boxes; arrow heads; men digging at excavation site; gravesites; stone burial areas.</p>
